A Quick Account Of My Trip To Atlanta, Georgia

My father is a Chiropractor in the State of California and he recently decided to attend a seminar in Atlanta, Georgia. I’ve been wanting to visit Georgia for quite some time, so my mother decided it would be a good idea if the entire family were to follow my father and all go to Atlanta at the same time.

I was hesitant to go, though… and for a number of reasons.

First of all, I kind of drive myself crazy when I am with my family. I’m so used to be alone and traveling by myself that I can’t stand moving at their incredibly slow pace. Looking like a tourist and not knowing what I am doing is something I try to avoid at all costs when I am traveling by myself. But when I am with my family there is no avoiding the fact that we look like a family on vacation.

Secondly, I really wanted to go to Georgia, but I had little or no interest in seeing the city of Atlanta. I am much more interested in the small country roads and lush, green mountains. So I was afraid that if I went on this trip I might never want to come back to Georgia and see the areas I truly wanted to see. I know this sounds a bit bizarre, but this is how I think!

In the end, I did decide to go. I flew from Salt Lake City to Denver and then continued my flight into Atlanta. My parents, however, flew from LAX and went straight to the Atlanta Airport. I met them in baggage claim.

From the airport we took the MARTA, which is Atlanta’s public train system, to our hotel – The Westin.

The hotel room was small, but the view was incredible! We could see practically everything in the city. It was great. I had fun staying up at night and just staring out the window, watching the cars below. What a view!

We didn’t do much our first day in Atlanta. We just walked around a little and explored the area. Not more than half a mile from our hotel was a big park where people were gathering to watch an outdoor movie on a giant portable movie screen. It was pretty cool. More cities should do this!

The day after arriving in Atlanta my sister and mother and I went to the Margaret Mitchell House and Museum. In case you don’t know, Margaret Mitchell was the woman who wrote the book, “Gone With The Wind.” Visiting this place was my mother’s idea, but I ended up really enjoying myself. The museum and house were not all that interesting, but I thought Margaret Mitchell herself was a very interesting person.

The next day we went to the Coca-Cola Museum. Apparently, Coca-Cola was developed in Atlanta… and they now have a huge building dedicated to brainwashing tourists into drinking Coke! The whole museum really was an exercise in brainwashing… but it was neat to see all the years of Coca-Cola merchandise and advertising. Because I’m interested in marketing, I found their ads and slogans extremely interesting.

At the end of the Coca-Cola Museum tour there was a large tasting room where you could sample all the Coca-Cola products from around the world. I don’t normally drink soda at all, so after about six different samples from places such as Africa, Asia, South America, and Europe, I was about to vomit. I don’t know why people like that stuff so much. It just made me feel sick.

We then went to an art museum on the far side of the city. It was neat, but we had to rush through it because we were so late. They had some great artwork there, but I can’t show you much of it because they restricted us from taking photos. We snuck a few photos in anyway though.

On our third day in Atlanta we went to a history museum. There was a big exhibit on the Civil War, the Atlanta Olympics, Southern Folk Art, and more.

We ate lunch at Johnny Rockets and I ordered french fries. They served them with a smiley face made from ketchup!

We also went to a big mansion. No one famous lived there really. It was just the home of some wealthy southerners in the early 1900’s. I didn’t think the house was very impressive, but the grounds were fantastic.

The highlight of the trip for me was the trip to Margaret Mitchell’s house. I thought she was pretty interesting.

The worst part of the trip was being in a big city and going at my family’s incredibly slow pace. We often times took the train to get from place to place, but if I had been in Atlanta on my own, I likely would have just walked to most of the places we went. They weren’t that far away.

In the end, I’d give downtown Atlanta an 8 out of 10. It was a fun little getaway, but I really want to go back to Georgia now and see what life is like outside the big city.

Twitter Is Down… Again

I’ve been using the service at Twitter.com for about the past two months and the more I use it, the more I find that I really like this weird little service.

I wrote a post about Twitter a few weeks ago and since that time I have accumulated a great little following. I now have 37 people following me on Twitter and I am following 5 others.

Despite how much I like the service, it seems that Twitter has some serious server problems. Half the time I try and visit Twitter.com, the page either takes 30 seconds to load or the website is completely down and I am unable to punch in my updates.

Just look at what I got the other day when I tried to log in:

Twitter is Down

Here are the 5 people I am currently following on Twitter. I’ve ranked them in order from my favorite to my least favorite:

Darren Rowse Problogger.net
Jeff Walker ProductLaunchFormula.com
Heather B. ArmstrongDooce.com
John Reese Income.com

Here’s another one (June 12, 2008):

Would You Wear This Thing?

I found a baseball cap while out hiking yesterday. It fits me real well, but I would never want to actually wear this thing around town. I’m definitely not one of those types of people.

My Ice Cream Addiction Has Got To End!

I’m an ice-cream-aholic! I admit it. I love ice cream and I find it very difficult to go for an entire day without eating some.

Yesterday I finished off whatever ice cream I had left in my fridge and decided that this was going to be the last bit of ice cream I was going to eat (at least for a little while).

So I went to the grocery store yesterday and didn’t buy any ice cream. It was hard to do, but I did it.

Instead of buying ice cream, I bought a bunch of bananas instead and put them in the freezer. The idea here being that if I get an ice cream craving, I can eat one of these frozen bananas instead. It’s not quite the same, but I hope it helps!

Frozen Banana

All this talk of ice cream has made me want it even more! And what’s worse is that it is hot today – a perfect day for a big bowl of ice cream. Ugh! I better go eat a banana.

I Think Bigfoot Might Be Gay

I just finished a book by leading Bigfoot authority, Loren Coleman. The book is titled, “Bigfoot! : The True Story of Apes in America.”

As you may or may not know, I have a slight fascination with the beast we know as “Bigfoot.” I wrote a report on bigfoot in the 6th grade and since that time have been both intrigued and terrified by the idea of a giant human-like ape wandering around in the woods. And because I spend so much time out in the forest by myself, the idea of Bigfoot scares me even more!

In Coleman’s book, he discusses many of the famous Bigfoot cases and reveals some Bigfoot stories I had never heard before. One of these unknown stories ended up causing a huge ruckus on the Internet after people listening to one of Coleman’s speeches misinterpreted his message and thought that the renowned Bigfoot expert was suggesting that Bigfoot might be gay!

Here’s what happened:

In 2001, Coleman was giving a speech to a good-sized group (about 225 people) of Bigfoot enthusiasts in Newcomerstown, Ohio. During his presentation, Coleman briefly told the story of a eyewitness who had seen Bigfoot having sex with a cow. Coleman “lightheartedly wondered aloud if 10 percent of the Bigfoot population, matching the figures we have for Homo sapiens, might be gay.” He then moved on to another subject.

At the end of Coleman’s lecture, the Bigfoot expert answered a number of questions, but no one brought up the “sex question.”

It was to Coleman’s surprise then, that a few days later the Internet was abuzz with outrage over his suggestion that Bigfoot might be gay.

People that were not even in attendance at the seminar were sending Coleman nasty emails and making horrible comments about him on the Web. Some people were upset with the fact that the Bigfoot expert had brought up the subject when there were children in attendance at the presentation.

One angry writer wrote, “Talking about bigfoot and anal sex with cattle by an unclassified creature when there are children in the audience who may view Bigfoot as a monster anyway, isn’t a subject YOU as the speaker, arbitrarily have the right to inflict on other families.” Another person wrote, “ The most important point is that you have NO credible evidence that Sasquatch have anal intercourse with cattle. What stupid illiterate speculation!!!!!!!!!!”

Then, something funny happened! Another Internet user responded by saying, “Actually, if Bigfoot was gay, he wouldn’t be having sex with cows, he’d be having sex with bulls!”

To follow that up, Dave Grenier of Olympia, Washington clarified the joke by saying that, no, “if Bigfoot was gay, he’d be having sex with another Bigfoot, not a bull.”

In the end, Coleman notes that to this day many people remember him only as the guy who said “Bigfoot is gay” and “has anal sex with cows.”

This might be a devastating professional blow for Coleman, but to me it’s just plain funny!

Miranda July - A Pretty Cool Person

For the past two days I’ve written about Miranda July and her film “Me And You And Everyone We Know” and her website at www.LearningToLoveYouMore.com.

Today I have just a short video for you to watch in which July discusses her involvement with a museum display of the work from the Learning To Love You More website.

Learning To Love You More

Miranda July's Learning To Love You More

Yesterday I posted about one of my favorite films of all time, “You And Me And Everyone We Know” and discussed in short the films creator - a woman by the name of Miranda July.

As mentioned previously, July is a multi-talented artist and one of her most public pieces of work is a website called Learning To Love You More (www.LearningToLoveYouMore.com)

It is difficult to describe exactly what the site is an how it works, so let me take the description straight from the source:

Learning to Love You More is both a web site and series of non-web presentations comprised of work made by the general public in response to assignments given by artists Miranda July and Harrell Fletcher. Yuri Ono designs and manages the web site.

Participants accept an assignment, complete it by following the simple but specific instructions, send in the required report (photograph, text, video, etc), and see their work posted on-line. Like a recipe, meditation practice, or familiar song, the prescriptive nature of these assignments is intended to guide people towards their own experience.

Since Learning To Love You More is also an ever-changing series of exhibitions, screenings and radio broadcasts presented all over the world, participant’s documentation is also their submission for possible inclusion in one of these presentations. Past presentations have taken place at venues that include The Whitney Museum in NYC, Rhodes College in Memphis, TN, Aurora Picture Show in Houston, TX, The Seattle Art Museum in Seattle, WA, the Wattis Institute in San Francisco CA, among others.
Since LTLYM inception in 2002 over 5000 people have participated in the project.

The best way to get a feel for the site is to visit it and search around. At first you may think it a little strange, but as you delve deeper into it’s content, you’ll begin to realize just how special this website truely is.

The website is so popular that July has taken it around the world, exhibiting the site and its many artifacts in museums of all shapes and sizes.

Just recently the best of the material from the website was comprised in a book with the same name - Learning To Love You More.

Check out the website and let me know what you think!

Me And You And Everyone We Know

me width=

About two years ago I walked into the local video rental store and picked up a film titled, “Me And You And Everyone We Know.” I had never heard of it and was unaware of any of the actors in the film, but I decided to check it out anyway.

That night, before I went to sleep, I popped in the DVD and began to watch.

Before I knew it, the film was over and I couldn’t believe what had just happened. This film, of which I knew nothing about, was one of the greatest films I had ever seen!

It was about 3 AM by the time I finished the movie and I wanted to find the nearest person and tell them all about this film, but everyone was asleep. That night as I lay in bed, all I could think about was the genius behind this film. And over the next coupe weeks I began to do some research on the writer, director, and main actor in the film – a woman by the name of Miranda July.

It is difficult to put Miranda in any sort of category because she does so many things. In short, she is an artist – and an exceptional one at that. She does everything from make films, perform, write, and more! She is incredibly multi-talented… and I like people who can do all sorts of different things.

I’ll discuss Miranda July in more detail in future posts, but for now, go out and get yourself a copy of “Me And You And Everyone We Know.” You’ll either be totally blown away or left wondering to yourself, “What the hell was Darren talking about?”

Either way, I can promise you this: You’ve never seen another film quite like it!

Check out the video below for one of the classic scenes from the film:
